The Local Area
The beautiful Derbyshire village of Baslow lies at the northern edge of Chatsworth Park in the Peak District.
Baslow boasts a good range of distinctive shops, cafes, pubs, hotels and excellent restaurants including Baslow Hall, an elegant manor house once home to the electrical pioneer Sebastion de Ferranti, which is now a Michelin starred restaurant.
The Church of St Anne, which has close links with the school, is beautifully located by the river on a site that has been a place of worship since Saxon times. The present church with its distinctive 13th century broach spire dates from about 1200 at the time of King John. It has been altered and restored many times, the latest being in 1853.
Built into the porch of St Anne’s is a 700-year old coffin stone carved with keys and a cross. Other features include a whip, contained in a glass case within the door, used for driving dogs out of the church.
Baslow is in a superb position, with magnificent views to be had from nearby Baslow Edge, where stands the Wellington Monument, erected in 1866, and the Eagle Stone. This great weathered block of gritstone was once a test of manhood for young men living in nearby villages who had to climb the rock before they could marry.
Other places of interest nearby include Chatsworth, Bakewell and Eyam
